LOTUS
EUROPA S
A revival of the name bestowed on the first mid-engined Lotus
GT INSPIRED TWO-SEATER
Although production of the 1960s and 70s Europa models ended in 1975, the Lotus Europa name was brought back in late 2005 with the announcement of the Europa S. Based on the popular Lotus Small Platform chassis used on the Elise and Exige, the Europa S was a slightly larger and more comfortable GT-style car but still extreme, with a more refined approach to comfort and technology that included comforts such as satellite navigation and leather trim.
A GRAND TOURING CAR
Coupled with hints of luxury such as full leather interior, driver and passenger airbags and carpets all as standard, Lotus created a driving experience which combined high performance with a more “plush” interior.
MORE ‘LOTUSNESS!’
Power for the Europa came from the 197bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Europa S weighed just 995kg. This low weight was obtained through the clever use of advanced and high tech materials including the now familiar extruded and bonded aluminium chassis, composite body panels and a very advanced composite energy absorbing front crash structure.
LUXURY ADDITIONS
Where the standard Europa S used lightweight composite components for items such as the steering column shroud, dash top, instrument and ventilation binnacles and sill covers, the Luxury Touring Pack option covered these and other components with four coloured leathers. The supportive sports seats were also clad in leather in a stripe pattern. Safety-critical composite components such as the passenger airbag door were coated in a high tech soft-to-the-touch material.
