LOTUS ELAN
TYPE 100
Only front-wheel drive car Lotus has ever produced
BALANCE, PRECISION AND SHEER DYNAMIC ABILITY
The Lotus Elan was re-launched in 1989 with a complete redesign for modern drivers. With a 1,588cc double overhead camshaft (DOHC) 16-valve engine, the all-new Elan was the only front-wheel drive car Lotus has ever produced and through an innovative “raft” suspension design, giving it typical Lotus drive experience.
WILL THRILL ANY DRIVER
The Lotus Elan, like its predecessor, is a special car for special people.
PURE DRIVING
A small number of non-turbo versions of the Elan were ordered and sold, but almost all Type 100 Elans were produced as the more-powerful turbocharged SE model. The SE car featured power-steering and 15-inch wheels as standard, and because several of the additional options listed (such as Air-Conditioning, leather seats and door trim) were only available on the SE, the demand for the normally aspirated car was understandably lower.
SALES SUCCESS FOR THE S2 ELAN
The Series 2 Elan was launched at the 1994 Geneva Motor Show. the ‘new’ model, called simply Elan S2 rather than Elan SE, was distinguished by new style larger diameter 16-inch, 5-spoke wheels and a numbered plate on the dashboard of each car. Only available in turbocharged form, the Elan S2 featured revisions to the suspension and steering where stiffer bushings were used to give a firmer ride and the power steering was given improved feel. The rear boot lid of the 800 units built carried an S2 decal alongside the Elan badge.
ELAN WINS MAJOR AWARD
In 1991 the Elan received the prestigious British Design Council award.
